Christmas finishes

The joys of the Christmas season have been keeping me from sewing, it started with card writing, end of year celebrations to attend and gift shopping, but luckily the baking was the last distraction.
There was about 20 minutes of help from the kids to cut out the gingerbread men, but after that I was back to baking solo!  The icing looks like the kids did it!

Spotlight had Decor containers on sale, so I brought some to hold this years teachers gifts.  Other years they have had lovely bright coloured containers for sale, which were much more festive.
With the baking done, I figured I had a bit of time to play.  My friend Lisa recently won some Go Cutter dies. She very kindly choose dies that I did not own, but we both liked, so she could use them on my machine and I could keep them!  When we were looking at my collection, it became apparently that I have predominately used the strip cutters and the 2.5 " half square triangle the most.
For the life of me I could not think why I brought this shape.  So I grabbed some fabric, did some cutting and slowly it all came back to me - this shape, makes wonderful stars!

And I had the right sized square and triangle to cut out the background fabric, yipee!

This was my first attempt, because I forgot to cut some of the diamonds upside down! I deemed it the prototype and it is staying at my place.  My insert piecing wasn't so good on this one, but I quickly mastered it.  Mainly thanks to the accurate cutting of the Go dies.
End result, two star mini quilts and some lovely wire hangers I brought earlier, which were the intended present, for two special quilty friends.  Now they have something to hang in them ;)
Happy quilting,
Sue

Temecula Quilt Company - We wish you a Merry Christmas Part 2

So I was going to be clever and show you each lot of blocks as I made them.  Life gets busy and it didn't happen.  Here is progress shot two.
And here is the finished mini quilt!  I had some time and I knew it was now or never, so this little quilt top got pieced and then quilted.  I didn't quilt the border, as it is so small, but perhaps later when I can borrow the cable border stencil my group have - we have broken up for the summer, so it will have to wait for now.
The finished quilt is 10.5 x 12.5 inches.  I tried to stick to Christmas colours, but think I will leave it hanging up to enjoy all year.
Happy quilting Sue.

More finished mini quilts!

This cute little dolls quilt has been a short WIP.  It was finished while my computer was offline, but I was also holding off revealing it, as it was intended as a gift for a friend who follows my blog.
I amended the pattern (original was on point) Shoofly Potpie by Kim Diehl from her book Simple Traditions.
You cannot see the border quilting very well, but I machine quilted a cable pattern.  It was fairly easy using my walking foot, but my marking pen was hard to see on the beige fabric.  The ideal marking pen is out there and one day I am going to find it!
This larger mini quilt is from Lori DeJarnatt's quilt along, Country Roads, so a few stencils later  and I found one that fitted this quilt that I could achieve on the machine!  I do really need to start hand quilting the little quilts...but I am a machine girl : )
Didn't take long, just the right frame of mind to get stuck into it.
Happy quilting, Sue

Temecula Quilt Company - We wish you a Merry Christmas part 1

I would like to say that I made one of these blocks a day, following the Temecula Quilt Company free patterns - We wish you a Merry Christmas (on their blog HERE), in the lead up to Christmas.  But the truth was while I was offline I was ignorantly bliss, as soon as the computer kicked back into gear, I immediate gorged on these sweet patterns and made all five at once!

To put the size into perspective the blocks currently measure 2 3/4"!!
Happy quilting Sue.

Mini spools of thread

A finish, yipee!
Thimble Blossom pattern Mini Spools - finished size 14.75" x 16.75"
Made using part of a Bonnie and Camille Miss Kate charm pack, random red fabric and white homespun.  Micro stippled by me, nearly causing blindness....I thought black thread on black background was tough, but this combination was just as bad.  But I love it sufficiently to consider making another one...there is still plenty of fabric in the stash!
And well, nearly a finish!  I have quilted the centre (SID) but the border needs something special and I am yet to decide what.
What should I call this mini? I have no idea if this is a real quilt pattern....its just how the bonus triangles ended up arranged and pleasing to my eye.....but it deserves a name that is more exciting then bonus blue triangles!
Happy quilting Sue.

Clean it up, throw it out, get organised!

Its typical cold winters weather here, except we are not getting much rain.  I decided that the sewing nook needed a big tidy up and some stuff had to go!
I started by rearranging my wall hangings and mini quilts.
Then I got stuck into the scraps I had accumulated but never sorted.  I threw things out...including a UFO....well, I just threw out all the tiny applique pieces I was never going to stitch down because I no longer like the pattern.  I rehoused the magazine pattern in the book case and I cut the background fabric up into 2.5" squares! I cut up all the scraps I could make into 2.5" squares or half square triangles for my Scrappy Sprouts project.
I discovered these pieced Dresden wedges left over from a quilt I made HERE back in 2013.  I still have a metre of purple fabric that matches these, but was never used....I am thinking I could make a nice pillow with these fabrics, so a new WIP is added to the list!
These lovely fussy cut tractors were also discovered.  I can feel another kids quilt coming up next!
I opened the mail to find this lovely thank you card from the new owner of the first Scrappy Bargello I made (HERE), a lady affected by the Dungog floods.  It is nice to know that the quilt it is loved and appreciated, but sad to hear that she is still waiting for major repairs to her unit, but I guess insurance claims and rebuilding takes time.
Happy quilting, Sue.

Kim Diehl star in a churn dash blocks

I was just popping in to read some of my favorite bloggers, after a six month absence!  Then I saw that there was this draft post, so figure...
