Midwinter Red Quilt - finished

 To make this quilt I used a Midwinter Red layer cake by Moda and used the then free Disappearing Pinwheel tutorial by Missouri Star Quilt Company. 

  It appears this pattern is now only available for sale via their website now, which you can find HERE.

 There was no wastage in this sew, cut, resew style pattern.  However all the bias edges end up as the blocks outside edges.  Which leads to very careful pinning to put the top together.  Stacey and I made this quilt top together at a camp June 2015.  Stacey got her top together quickly that same weekend.

It took me a lot longer, mainly because I didnt want to deal with those bias edges.  And then when I wanted to I had to go shopping for the sashing and border fabrics.

 SEW glad I took my time and find the right fabrics.  I had the quilt professionally quilted by Vicki Jenkin and love the swirl design we picked.  Vicki always does a great job and she was very nice and said my woopy corner wasn't that bad...she definitely quilted it flat, I didn't peg it on the line straight!

Midwinter Red - pinwheel in a churn dash top is finished!

Honestly I have to find a better name for this quilt!

I have been referring to it as the pinwheel in a churn dash - but while descriptive it is a mouthful!

 I finally got the borders on, so now she is a completed top.  Still a bit rippled in one corner, because of the bias edges of the blocks.  But not as bad as I had imaged it might be.  That is code for "hope it quilts out" verses "I am too embarrassed to send it to the long arm quilter!"

My quilt hanger is away, so nothing but terrible photos  - sorry about that!  This quilt is a decent size at 82 x 69" so I had to buy a backing - nothing in the stash is sufficiently large (or red) enough.  A quick trip to Quilters Harvest (Warracknabeal) and I got this print on sale!

Happy days, another flimsy finish and another UFO near completion.

Mid Winter Red - making progress in Summer

At camp, during winter 2015 (Aussie winter) I made these blocks from a Mid Winter Red layer cake, using a tutorial by Missouri Quilt Co.  The pattern is called Disappearing pinwheel by Missouri Quilt Co, but I have been referring to them as Pinwheel in a Churn Dash on my UFO list.

 The 20 blocks were relegated to the naughty box because the outside edges were all on the bias, due to the construction method (ie quick and easy!).  

Hence the blocks were all slightly different sizes and needed trimming.

I hate trimming!

However I love buying fabric.  So with sashing and cornerstone fabric purchased these blocks came out of the naughty bin.

Confession; I never trimmed them!

I just pinned carefully and sewed them to the correctly sized sashing and pressed, pressed, pressed.

They look pretty good to me!

I ran out of sashing, but have ordered more by snail mail.  

In the meantime its nice to know that one UFO is back on track.

Red and white rocks!

I have wanted to make a Pinwheel in a churn dash quilt - as demonstrated by the gorgeous Jenny Doan from Missouri Star Quilt Company - using a Midwinter Red layer cake.  My weekend in Bordertown was the perfect opportunity, or excuse to start a new quilt!

 

Firstly I matched up lights and darks and made big pinwheels.  Then cutting in a similar fashion to split nine patches, you end up with the final pinwheel inside a churn dash block.

I think these blocks will benefit from some sashing but as I don't have any in the Midwinter Red range, I set these blocks aside for the rest of the weekend.

My long hoarded red jelly roll (not a Moda one, was made by a quilt shop) came out for some fun.  Because I had the red roll in my stash I brought a neutral roll - which was from Moda - Floral Gatherings shirtings by Primitive Gatherings ages ago to accompany it.

I stitched and cut, stitched and pressed and then we ran out of time in Bordertown.  A busy week didn't see me enjoy any quilting until Friday.  But it wasn't until Sunday that I had the beginnings of a final dresden to show you.  

And guess what....yep I am short, only have 11 Dresden's, so back to stitching to make up the 12th!

But on the bright side, for the month of July in the Rainbow Scrappy challenge the colour is RED!  I will have no problem this month, lots of red scraps floating around my sewing room :)

Patchwork Camp

 A lovely weekend was spent sewing with friends. 

Some projects just needed a border to finish them.

Others needed a few rows stitched together.

This raggy quilt needed space to be laid out, before stitching it together.

Others grew like Topsy and became a top!

Some projects were kits that had sat in cupboards for a long time

But they really shone once they had the chance! 

Others just quietly grew and 

with some new fabric purchases multiplied some more!  

Lots of individual blocks were stitched by machine, some by hand,  there was dressmaking and even mending...sorry no photos of outfits, couldn't find a willing model ; )

Layer cakes became completed tops.

Lots of laughs, chatting, catching up on old and new news and ever present the hum of sewing machines busy at work.

None of these quilts are mine....I will show you my work in the next post,
